Review: Nuance by Salma Hayek Eyeshadow Palette

Nuance Neutral Expressions Palette Review and Swatches

Nuance by Salma Hayek is a cosmetics line exclusive to CVS.  The line has three different 6-pan eyeshadow palettes priced at $13.99 each.  The packaging for the palettes is nice, sturdy and does provide a small mirror on the inside for application.  The nice packaging and addition of argan oil as an ingredient may be contributors to the price.  These eyeshadows are on the firm side and not very powdery.  This is a type of formula that I am typically a fan of, however if you like a formula more like the Covergirl Trunaked Roses, you may not be a fan.

If you work in a professional atmosphere or like simple eyeshadow looks, I think you’d enjoy this palette.  Based on the instructions given by the brand, shades 2 and 5 are for all over bases and/or highlights, Shades 1, 3, and 6 are for some definition in the crease and shade 4 is intended to be used as a liner.  If you’re a person who needs/wants a matte transition or crease shade, then this palette won’t meet your needs unless you don’t mind pulling in another single eyeshadow or palette.  You’ll find alot of guidance that recommends a matte, mid-tone shade to put in the crease.  The closest shade to a mid-tone in this palette is shade 1, but it does have a sheen to it and may be too dark as a crease shade for lighter skin tones.

These eyeshadows are easy to work with and easy to blend.  I used shades 1, 3, and 6 with both flat shader brushes and my fingers.  I didn’t find using my fingers made much difference in how pigmented they looked on my eyes, so I think any application method you choose should be fine.  I personally find the shimmer shades (1,3,6) to show up better on my skin tone with the use of Milani Shadow Eyez in Almond Cream as a base.  I don’t think a base is necessary for everyone; I benefit from the base because the colors are so close in tone to my skin color.  Shade 4 is very pigmented, but again they have intended for it to be used as a liner, so tread lightly if you use it for a crease or outer v shade.  Shade 5 does have some shimmer particles in it, but it doesn’t seem to translate to my skin as anything other than a matte.

While I do enjoy this palette, I would suggest waiting for the 25% off specials that CVS does on the Nuance brand.  If you are someone willing to pay more for nice packaging and like an understated or simple eye look, then I’d go check this out at CVS.  I also think this could be nice for people who don’t feel comfortable coordinating colors on their own, but also get overwhelmed by larger palettes.  If you are someone all about bang for your buck, despite packaging, I’d look elsewhere (like at Walmart where they have those newer 10-pan wet n wild palettes).

If you are someone in the middle, you could look into the L’oreal La Palette Nude 1 and La Palette Nude 2.  If you can get the L’oreal palettes from Target or Walmart, you will get a better value than at CVS or Walgreens.

This Palette retails for $13.99 at www.cvs.com.  Has anyone else tried this palette?  If so, let us know your skin tone and thoughts on it in the comments below.

  1. I have it also and been playing with it. I agree with everything you said. The only thing is there isn't a good transition color. I'm light/fair skin with a little hooded eyelid and can't use shimmer as a transition so I couldn't do a whole look with this pallets. I totally agree with your review of the 5th shade having no glitter transfer on the skin.
